Upper Mustang is basically upper northern part of Mustang district which occupies two third of Mustang to northern area bordered with Tibet. The history of Mustang is amazing since it was an independent kingdom, also called Lo, until it fell to Gorkha Empire (later Kathmandu) in 1795. As per archeological evidence, there are only two geographical locations which have continuous civilization for the last two thousand years. The 55 caves found in Mustang depicting the life of Buddha and current Lo Manthang palace existing since the last several centuries provide sufficient evidence to such claim. Lying in the rain shadow of Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri, the region best invites its visitors during rainy season in Nepal.

The region is typically known for its desert beauty and harsh, cliff faced landscapes. Since this remote Trans Himalayan Mountain area is bordered with Tibet, it has a distinct Tibetan feel both in its people and culture while lower part of Mustang has an amalgamation of both Tibetan and Nepalese culture. Upper Mustang is one of the most protected areas in the world and hence has been declared a restricted zone to preserve its organic culture and landscapes by the government of Nepal. Hiking through the trails of Upper Mustang means not only to enjoy and explore a hidden treasure on earth but also exploring many centuries’ old ancient civilizational cultures and many more."

Upper Mustang refers to the northern part of Mustang district, covering two-thirds of the area and bordering Tibet. The history of Mustang is fascinating as it used to be an independent kingdom called Lo until it was conquered by the Gorkha Empire (later Kathmandu) in 1795. According to archaeological evidence, there are only two places on earth where civilization has been continuous for over two thousand years, and Mustang is one of them. The 55 caves found in Mustang, which depict the life of Buddha, and the Lo Manthang palace, which has stood for several centuries, provide ample evidence of this claim. The region is located in the rain shadow of Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri, and it is best visited during the rainy season in Nepal. The area is well-known for its beautiful desert landscapes and rugged, cliff-faced terrain. Since Upper Mustang is situated in a remote Trans-Himalayan Mountain region bordering Tibet, it has a distinctive Tibetan character in terms of its people and culture, while the lower part of Mustang has a blend of both Tibetan and Nepalese cultures. Upper Mustang is one of the most heavily protected areas in the world and has been designated as a restricted zone by the government of Nepal to safeguard its natural environment and cultural heritage. Trekking through the trails of Upper Mustang not only provides an opportunity to discover a hidden gem on earth but also to explore ancient civilizations that have thrived for many centuries.

The journey begins in Kathmandu and leads to the beautiful city of Pokhara, along winding roads following the Annapurna circuit route. Upon reaching Beni, 82 km from Pokhara, the off-road adventure begins, following the Kaligandaki River along the ancient salt trading route between Nepal and Tibet to Muktinath Temple. Riding along the world's deepest Kaligandaki Gorge is an exceptional experience in itself. The pristine lifestyle of the indigenous Buddhist community, historic monasteries, and ancient caves will make you feel like you are in Tibet. Embark on a thrilling adventure by riding a Classic Enfield of 500cc or a Royal Enfield Himalayan bike of 411cc, and traverse the dusty, desolate, and treeless landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau while exploring small settlements of people who reflect the culture and lifestyle of ancient Tibet. Though it may seem uncomfortable riding off-road, it is a pure adventure that will be etched in your memory forever.

We will follow the same trail to reach Lo Manthang. While retracing we will be taking a day off in Pokhara to explore the lakes and caves or trying an adventure activity such as paragliding, zip-lining, or bungee jumping is a great option. The pubs in lakeside Pokhara are excellent places to hang out in the evenings and enjoy some fresh live music while sipping on your beers.
